The DPMS RECON rifle I reviewed a couple weeks back — a direct competitor to the Savage MSR — was fitted with the older style Picatinny rail hand guard – too bulky and jagged. Reliability * * * * * The trigger that comes with the top-of-the-line MSR Recon was a surprisingly bad eight-pound affair. I shelled out $1750 for my SR-762 and it had about an 8 pound trigger in it from the factory. Of course the wrench isn’t that expensive anyway. I literally built my AR with a pair of needle nose pliers, a punch and a rubber mallet. With the velocity loss, what bullet weight range is best for defense purpose? In this competition-focused gun, that heavy, gritty trigger seems to have disappeared. You’ll see those as relief cuts in the magazine well, as well as the forward portion of the mag well. That’s the real kicker here: while the DPMS has a better trigger, replacing a trigger is a lot cheaper and easier than replacing a handguard. I have not shot this gun yet. Using the supplied ammunition, I shot a 20-round box of each type and averaged the results. I would much prefer a “big boy” latch, as this small handle gets in the way of scope rings. LOL. The great thing about the Hogue grip is that it provides a non-slip surface and plenty of real estate to grip. The rusty bolts and rusty larger threaded adjustables made me wonder if Caldwell has screwed the pooch on quality fasteners. It must be the 1.0 version since it doesn’t have the Blackhawk furniture. Case in point: the Savage MSR or “Modern Savage Rifle” series: four models of semi-automatic firearms based on the AR-15 design. This one gets extra credit for the adjustable gas block. The Valkyrie is based on their Recon model, and I was not particularly impressed with that rifle’s trigger. There are some minor style embellishments in the lower receiver.
